Decrease in Detentions at US Border
El Paso, TX: The number of
illegal immigrants apprehended at U.S. borders has decreased significantly. In fiscal year 2009 (which ends in September), there were 556,000 detentions, which represents a decrease of about 23 percent. This figure is the lowest it has been since the 1970s. Since 2000, the U.S. has seen a decrease in the number of illegal immigrants who try to cross into the U.S. However, 2009 represented a sharp decrease. Some immigration experts remark that the decline can be indicative of the success of the U.S. in achieving
border security. Others remark that the decline can be attributed to a combination of the economy and an increase in border patrol. According to the Migration Policy Institute, the recession in the United States has hit immigrants especially hard, with immigrant populations representing a much higher unemployment rate than native-born Americans. |

Illegal Immigrants Become a Focus in Healthcare Reform
Washington, DC: Healthcare for illegal immigrants has emerged as a hot topic in the healthcare reform debate. The bill that passed in the House of Representatives in early November permits illegal immigrants to purchase private health insurance, as long as they don’t receive any governmental funds or subsidies to pay for it. Supporters of this bill say that by allowing immigrants access to health care (with their own money), visits to the emergency room will undoubtedly be reduced, leading to a reduction in everyone’s health care costs. Critics of this bill, however, have commented that the government will “turn a blind eye” and allow
undocumented immigrants to have government-subsidized health care, doubting that immigration status would be checked. President Obama has commented, “There are also those who claim that our reform effort will insure illegal
immigrants. This too, is false- the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally.” |

US Doctors Target Pregnant Mexican Women
Phoenix, AZ: Some American doctors are focusing their advertising campaigns on pregnant, Mexican women. In Arizona, a billboard reads “Do you want to have your baby in the United States?” Increasingly, doctors in Arizona have been attempting to target border crossers coming from Mexico to pay for American healthcare, including childbirth procedures. Doctors can typically charge $1300 to over $2000 depending on the procedure (i.e. cesarean or vaginal). Immigrants are not allowed to be turned down at the
border just because they are pregnant, and will gain admission to the United States as long as they produce the appropriate documentation. Many immigrants desire to have their baby in the United States, because they are automatically considered
United States citizens. The American doctor’s advertising campaigns has drawn some negative attention. A representative for the Center for Immigration Studies remarked that this is an immigration abuse and authorities “should crack down on these doctors who are putting greed ahead of the best interests of their own country.” Conversely, however, Dr. Jose Duran, one of the advertisers, maintains that people don’t come to give birth in the U.S. for citizenship purposes, instead they come for the “services and the technology, “not the citizenship. |

Workplace Immigration audits take place of raids on places of employment
San Diego, CA: In prior years, the U.S. government would conduct immigration raids at various workplaces and arrest immigrants that were
not authorized to work in the United States. Today, however, the the government is taking a new approach and is focusing on employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants. Therefore, instead of making arrests, immigration authorities are conducting audits of the employment records at hundreds of companies across the United States. Under this new approach, undocumented workers would face job loss instead of jail time or deportation. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that it plans to review the employment records of over 1,000 companies, to ensure that employers are complying with proper procedures. For all new hires, it is a federal requirement that employers check for appropriate documentation for
work authorization and that employees fill out form I-9, which ensures that the new employee is authorized to work in the country. |

Former U.S. Immigration Officer Pleads Guilty to Producing False Immigration Documents
Chicago, IL: A former deportation officer with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plead guilty to producing false documents and destroying governmental files. Thomas P. Randell worked for the agency from 2000 to 2009. In that time, he admitted that he destroyed the immigration files of two undocumented immigrants scheduled for deportation and also granted temporary legal resident status to an immigrant who was scheduled for
deportation. Mr. Randell was first arrested in 2008, and faces a maximum of 25 years in prison, although authorities indicate he is more likely to get 33 months in prison. The former ICE employee was responsible for supervising
undocumented immigrants with deportation orders, but who were not yet in immigration custody. Mr. Randall admitted to assisting two immigrants who were scheduled for deportation, by making their files “disappear.”He also admitted that he granted legal permanent resident status to a Hungarian resident whose green card expired, and was eligible for deportation due to felony convictions. |

For Sale: Restaurant and Green Card
Boston, MA: A Boston businessman recently placed his home, farm, and restaurant up for sale as well as the promise of obtaining a Green Card. “Tully Mill” is approximately 80 miles outside of Boston and includes a house, restaurant, and pig farm. Under the
EB-5 Visa program, an investment of 1 Million and the employment of 10 American workers could grant the foreign investor and his/her immediate family members
Green Cards. The seller is of Irish descent, and is targeting Irish immigrants for the sale of his business. He remarked that “Tully Mill” could appeal to a family in the restaurant or catering business looking to invest and immigrate to the United States. The United States is becoming more appealing to foreign investors for several reasons. The current exchange rate between the Euro and Dollar has made the U.S. a reasonable place to live. In addition, the U.S. offers reasonable financing rates and a real estate market that is believed to have hit “bottom.” The businessman plans to pitch the sale of the restaurant to Irish buyers, as it is an Irish style pub. |
